Déraciné has a fantastic atmosphere and wonderful storytelling. It utilizes VR and PlayStation Move to create a type of interaction not seen in other games. The innocence characters show to the player add a warm and friendly feeling to what is already a fascinating adventure game.

Déraciné is a wonderful faerie tale from beginning to end, with all the mystery and lore breadcrumbs of a proper From Software to keep players guessing until the end.

FromSoftware steps away from brutal combat to deliver a touching, often heartbreaking adventure, and it's one of the absolute best PSVR adventures currently available.

Déraciné is a VR experience that will not take to long to finish, but will leave a lasting impression. Its one of those games that you can play through multiple times to see if there are other ways to complete a task or see if there are other things to interact with you missed before. I’m hoping that more can be added with DLC in the future, as I can see so much potential to expand this world. Clocking in at just under 4 hours, it may put off some players with its overall length and presentation, but if you want to experience an extremely unique VR game for the PSVR, then I can highly recommend Déraciné. There is nothing quite like it available.

The intriguing story is Déraciné's main draw, but the gameplay's a close second, even though the game does manage to become rather repetitive after a while.

Deracine is one of the better experiences on the PSVR with a compelling story and some interesting gameplay. It feels like a complete experience from start to finish and has an interesting world that begs to be explored further.

Déraciné subverts Japanese horror tropes as easily as it conceals the limitations of virtual reality. By casting the player in an active and passive role in its narrative, it juxtaposes agency with accountability as it creates a tranquil, sinister story. Déraciné is a return to FromSoftware practicing their talent inside of darkness, but mercifully away from Souls.

It's a pity that everyone that doesn't have a VR headset will miss out, because Déraciné is really quite remarkable.

Who or what the titular Déraciné may be is unclear, but don’t let that dissuade you from walking through this wonderful title. A charming cast of characters pair with an incredible environment to explore, while the stirring soundtrack helps to elevate an already good title. Throw in the great narrative, in and of itself a rarity in VR at this point, and you have one of the best titles available thus far for Sony’s headset.

Déraciné is a fantastic VR experience, with a good story and superb universe. If you own a PSVR, you have to try it.

Déraciné is one of the best exponents of traditional video games on PlayStation VR, for the artistic work done by From Software and Japan Studio, and is recommended to those who are already familiar with smaller games and want a "complete" title to savor in virtual reality.

Deracine’s initially dulcet tone certainly won’t be for everyone but scratch below the surface and you’ll discover a VR adventure that heads in some fascinating new directions. It’s a bizarre beast, placing the ambiguity From Software is known for in the front and center but, despite its often ham-fisted dialogue, it finds genuinely powerful moments of connection as it weaves a memorable yarn.

As the first VR game of Hidetaka Miyazaki, Deracine is a good start. The graphics and the playing part are both nice, and the narrative style will impress a lot of players.

FromSoftware’s foray into VR is as fascinating for its storytelling ambitions as it is disappointing in its overly familiar gameplay.

An interesting adventur with some control issues that works exclusively on PS VR, but is not as tailored to VR as we thought it would be.

Déraciné is a beautiful game, with a moving story and simple mechanics. We enjoyed its exploration (with an immersive use of VR) and storyline, but it´s short, and puzzle solving is too easy.

Déraciné is an engaging VR adventure with a tinge of darkness to it that other such games often shy away from. There is a frisson of tension in this story that drives you forward through the conservative VR gameplay mechanics to find out if FromSoftware’s reputation for dark material will eventually surface.

Déraciné is definitely not for everyone but it still has that FromSoftware magic about it, albeit slightly less so this time around.

A pretty good experiment from FromSoftware, creators Dark Souls. The approach of the Japanese studio with VR tech is interesting, but rough around the edges.

Déraciné is a walking simulator mixed with graphic adventure that strikes a lot more for the binomial atmosphere-narration than for the rest of the game.

Déraciné creates what may be the most enriching world yet seen in VR, but only scratches the surface in terms of actual gameplay.

Miyazaki also describes his latest work as “a quiet game for VR”, and again it’s an appropriate view. There are none of the scares or action you’d find in a Souls game. Instead it’s a game about sedate exploration and creeping chills. Not all of the experiments or ideas pay off, but the ones that do make for an absorbing ghost story with just the right amount of weirdness for fans of the creator. Despite being marred by clunky controls this is one of the best games available for PSVR owners.
  24. 70
Déraciné is a slow build with little in the way of VR gimmicks or challenge but come its conclusion I was satisfied with how the tale played out.

Déraciné maintains a calm and quiet focus on puzzle solving, characters, and its world above all else. Although it has a few underutilized mechanics and increasingly confusing time jumps, its story and atmosphere are strong enough to keep you engaged until the end.

In terms of gameplay, Déraciné could be too simple, chaotic and sometimes even disjointed, but it’s impossible to deny its power to seduce the player with its fragmented narrative.
  27. Nov 6, 2018

Déraciné approaches VR in the right way, letting the player soak in the environment at their leisure, but the teleportation movement is awkward and most of your engagement outside the narrative hinges on how much you enjoy picking up objects, looking at them, and putting them somewhere else. The world is interesting, and the narrative features a handful of fun, dark twists, but the ultimate experience is bland, even if it does have its charms.

This is not bad for a VR experiment of the Dark Souls studio From Software. The setting is amazing, it is too bad it can't be explored all too well using the Move-controllers.

A fascinating narrative VR adventure partially ruined by too linear gameplay and poorly conceived puzzles.

Both plot and atmosphere are good in Déraciné, but its puzzles won't make you work too hard.

I love seeing From Software getting out of their comfort zone. It’s a nice change of pace and a good way to challenge themselves creatively, but I would have liked to see a little bit more out of the game. I want them to play against the expectations of the genre a bit more because if you strip away the atmosphere and the story, there’s nothing here you haven’t played before.

Déraciné is a solid addition to PSVR's growing stable of exclusives. It's not a must-play game though, especially if you've been through any of the other VR adventure games out there.

Fans of first-person adventure games and obtuse plots will love their time with Deracine. Its engaging story and atmosphere will keep you hooked until the end and after it's all over, you're sure to think back on this haunting tale for years to come.

Déraciné isn't really a true VR title as the VR doesn't bring much to the experience. Still it's an enjoyable ride as From Software has loads of know-how in terms of narrative and artistic direction.

Déraciné is beautiful and atmospheric and has a deep and absorbing story to tell, but its easy to question why this needs to be a VR title. The tonal inconsistency and node-based movement might also be off-putting, but for those who wish to be absorbed in a story, Déraciné is worth giving a look.

Déraciné isn’t for everyone, even if you fancy yourself a staunch fan of FromSoftware’s previous work. The slow, deliberate pacing, the vague puzzles, and a story that revolves around fairies don’t add up to a must-buy PlayStation VR experience. It’s an oddity and one that wants you to occasionally stop, stare, and soak in its atmosphere. Déraciné will be divisive; a borefest for some, yet bizarrely enthralling for others.
  39. 60
While Déraciné is worth playing and figuring out for yourself, it’s hard to recommend with enthusiasm. While intriguing and mysterious, the storytelling does have fundamental issues that make the overall mystery feel unearned and the tension intangible.
  40. 60
Déraciné has an interesting approach that only FromSoftware can deliver. At the same time, enough stands in the way of the overall package that diminishes what the game could have been. Fans of FromSoftware storytelling will find something interesting here, but others will dislike the pacing and execution.

Despite the developer's pedigree with slower-moving games like Echo Night, it had great difficulty putting together a meaningful narrative that was pleasurable in any real way to watch unfold. If From Software opts to create another VR title in the future, I hope it's at the very least a different genre.

Deracine doesn’t stick the landing with its ending, and the game can often be more annoying to play than it is fun. It gets points for its bizarre atmosphere and intriguing plot, but they’re not quite enough to make it a game worth playing through.

Deracine has the buildings blocks of a good VR debut from Dark Souls creator FromSoftware, but it lacks the engrossing gameplay and mystique that has made the studio's previous titles so successful.

FromSoftware’s first VR game is full of interesting ideas but very little entertainment, with frustrating storytelling and tiresome puzzles.

Déraciné is one of the finest examples yet of someone setting out to create a VR game before actually finding out what's fun or interesting to do when you have a headset on your head and motion tracked controllers in your hands. Although comfortable to play and decent looking, the game is designed in a way that perfectly deprives the player of any agency, leaving it as little more than a point and click simulator where you watch a woefully scattered story about characters you have no reason to care about. If nothing else, Déraciné offers up several concrete examples of how not to design a VR game.

Dull adventure game mechanics are enlivened by a brilliant sense of dread, as the Dark Souls director turns his hand to VR. [Eurogamer Recommended]
  2. Nov 6, 2018
Looked at as a whole, there’s something defiantly refreshing about how brazen a departure Déraciné is from Miyazaki and his team’s flashiest, most cash-catching work.
  3. Nov 7, 2018
It might not be what you expected of From Software, but it’s still worth seeing what it’s like to be a faerie for a few hours.

Déraciné is a delicately told melancholy short where you play a faerie in a small boarding school. A gentle narrative, which has charactersDéraciné is a delicately told melancholy short where you play a faerie in a small boarding school. A gentle narrative, which has characters with fully animated faces (abnormal for From Software), that will move you to solve it's tender story-teller's puzzles as you attempt to right the wrongs of their past. The string duo soundtrack perfectly conveys the character's woeful innocence as the sullen melodies chase each other down the hallowed halls of this unforgettable school. It's end will likely leave you with a heavy heart and throughout it's unfolding, your head will be spinning with how characters, settings, and details from this faerie tale might possibly connect to other FS titles...
